Looking for a New Read-Aloud?

The kids and I are enjoying a sweet book together: The Five Little Peppers and How They Grew, by Margaret Sidney. We're only about half way through the book, and I have not read it before, so we are all enjoying the unfolding story together.

The book is about widowed Mrs. Pepper and her five young children. They are very poor and the mother as well as the older children must work hard to simply keep food on the table. The book was written in the late 1800's, and the writing is old-fashioned and charming. My very favorite aspect of the book, however, is the sweet and sacrificial relationship between the siblings. Even though this *isn't* always a reality here at our house--and maybe
because it isn't--I love that my kids are enjoying the sweetness that's exampled in the fictional Pepper home.

Are you enjoying any good books with your children?

We read an abridged version of The Five Little Peppers and How They Grew. I'm sure the longer version is better, but I still enjoyed it.

We are reading On the Banks of Plum Creek. We are working through all the Little House books, and enjoying them immensely. Bonus: we are studying the Modern era in history, so reading the Little House books enhances that (no, I didn't plan that :)).

Oh, I love the Little House books! Probably I enjoyed them more than my kids! I've been thinking that it's probably about time to cycle through the series again, since my youngest three don't remember reading them. So many great books, so little time! :)

Oh! We read that book last year, and we all loved it! As soon as we finish "Traitor: The Case of Benedict Arnold" we are going to begin "Little House in the Big Woods". We are studying American history this year and there are sooo many good books to read aloud, I know I'll never fit them all in!
